Additional Information about Chelone obliqua Tiny Tortuga™ 'Armitpp02'
Chelone (rhymes with "baloney") was a nymph in Greek mythology who insulted the gods by ridiculing or not attending (versions vary) the marriage of Zeus to Hera. The gods punished her by turning her into a turtle.
'Armtipp02' is a compact, upright turtlehead variety known for its dark green foliage with bronzy tones and deep pink flowers. Mature plants grow to approximately 2 feet tall with a 1.25-foot spread. The glossy, ovate leaves reach about 3.25 inches long and 2 inches wide, transitioning from bronzy green to deep black-green.
Native to North American wetlands, this plant features upright stems with oppositely arranged, serrated leaves. Its spike-like cymes produce tubular flowers in shades ranging from white to pink to deep purple-red, attracting and primarily pollinated by bumblebees.
Growing & Maintenance Tips for Chelone obliqua Tiny Tortuga™ 'Armitpp02'
Thrives in moist, rich, humusy soils with medium to wet conditions in full sun to partial shade. Prefers part shade in cooler summer climates but can tolerate nearly full shade. To manage height, consider pinching back stem ends in spring, especially in heavily shaded areas where plants may require additional support.
