Additional Information about Scutellaria 'Bumblebee Blues'

A standout selection of the native skullcap, Scutellaria ‘Bumblebee Blues’ has rich cobalt-blue flowers and a strong upright presence to the garden. A sister seedling of ‘Appalachian Blues’, this selection comes from the same naturally occurring hybrid between S. ovata and S. serrata, both native to the mountains of West Virginia.

Selected by West Virginia plantsman Peter Heus, ‘Bumblebee Blues’ grows a little taller and offers even more flower power, reaching 18–24 inches tall and spreading 24–30 inches wide. Deep purple stems and serrated foliage create a backdrop for large clusters of hooded, salvia-like blue flowers with contrasting white throats. Blooming from late spring into summer, the flowers are especially attractive to bumblebees and other pollinators. The plant forms a sturdy, upright clump and performs well in full sun to part shade, with good drought tolerance once established!

Growing & Maintenance Tips for Scutellaria 'Bumblebee Blues'

Grow in average, well-drained soil and provide regular moisture while plants establish. Once established, it tolerates drier conditions. Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring to refresh the plant.
